Needles and I scarfed down the burgers and fries, then headed back to the Bronco.

“I want to go to Wolfsbane to check on Dylan’s and Chloe’s alibis.” I shut the car door, turned over the engine, and pulled out onto the street. “By then, hopefully Doc will call with the autopsy report.”

Wolfsbane was located on the east side of town by the fire station. It was too early in the afternoon for the bar to be busy, which made it a great time to talk to bartenders and servers.

I ambled over to the handsome bartender behind the counter and hopped up onto a barstool.

“Hey,” he said, flipping the dishtowel in his hand over his shoulder. “I heard about you. The bartender over at Bites & Beers said your flying partner is cool.” He motioned to Needles hovering near my shoulder. “Can I get you two something to drink?”

“Rum and Coke,” Needles said, his wings glowing bright green. “Hold the Coke.”

“No, thanks.” I ignored Needles’ huff as he landed on my shoulder. “Just here to ask a couple questions.”

“Shoot. I’ll see what I can tell you.”

I looked at his nametag. “Brillo?”

He grinned and ran his palm over his curly, coarse hair. “Nickname. Werewolf genes can sometimes be a curse.”

“Well, Brillo,” I said. “I’m hoping you can help me out. Were you working last night?”

“Until close.”

“What time did you arrive?”

He shrugged. “Guess I came on around five.”

“Do you remember seeing Dylan Curseman and Chloe Waterson hanging around here last night?”

“Sure do.” He pointed behind my shoulder. “They were over there in the corner booth most of the night.”

“Do you know what time they arrived?” I asked.

Brillo frowned. “It was later in the evening. I think Chloe came in around nine-fifteen? Something like that. Dylan was already here and getting ready to go on stage to play. I remember that.” He looked past my shoulder and narrowed his eyes. “I think Chloe was upset.”

“About what?”

“I’m not exactly sure. She came to the bar and ordered a cranberry vodka twist and said something like, ‘My sister makes me drink like the fish I am,’ or something like that. I asked her if she was okay, and she said she and Dylan were fighting with her sister. I didn’t ask anything else after that—just gave her the drink. Dylan went on, and Chloe stuck around just long enough to finish her drink before she left.”

“You’re thinking she left around ten?” I asked.

“I mean, I can’t tell you the exact time because…” He trailed off. “Actually, maybe I can. She paid for half of the tab before leaving. Hold on.” He left and returned a few minutes later, holding a receipt. “Looks like she left at ten-fifteen.”

“We’re only ten minutes from the houseboat,” Needles said.

“What about Dylan? What time did he leave?”

“He finished jammin’ around eleven,” he said. “After him was the tribute band, Steppenwolf Too. They played until one in the morning.”

“Thanks for the info, Brillo.” I reached out and snatched a couple pretzels from the bowl and handed them to Needles.
